Vesuvius, or more properly the Somma-Vesuvius, the volcano is a layer of medium size which reaches a maximum height of 1281 m asl It is the oldest volcano of Mount Somma, whose summit sank creating a caldera, and the most recent volcano of Vesuvius, who grew up within this caldera.

The volcanic activity in the Somma-Vesuvius dates back to at least 400,000 years ago, some older lavas found in the 1345 m deep drilling

The history of the Somma-Vesuvius volcano began about 25,000 years ago with the increase of the sum as a result of predominantly effusive eruptions and explosive subject of low energy. This activity lasted until about 19,000 years ago and has resulted in the formation of the Somma volcano whose profile is likely rebuilt in red in the picture below. The northern part of the oldest building is still well preserved and is represented by Monte Somma
