Capri

Around us

The island of Capri is located in the Gulf of Naples, between the Sorrento peninsula, Cape Miseno and the islands of Procida and Ischia. Of calcareous origin, its lower section is at the center, while its sides are high and surrounded by the most appalling precipices, where there are numerous caves. Its terrain is composed, to the west from the slopes of Mount Solaro and, to the east, from Mount St. Michael, with the Cross and Mount Tuoro.

The greek historian and geographer Strabo in his Geography, he considered that Capri was once joined to the mainland. His hypothesis was confirmed recently, both from analogue geological linking the island to the peninsula of Sorrento and from some archaeological discoveries.

Together on the island there are two cities, both for the different natural geographic separation and for traditional and ethnic origin: Capri and Anacapri. This differentiation is explained by the natural closeness to the sea of Capri: the presence of the port has facilitated trade and cultural relations with the Kingdom of Naples and determined, accordingly, a greater economic prosperity.

The two communities were in eternal conflict, working to defend all their rights, exasperated by the lack of true independence that forced her to accept, over the centuries, the pressing demands of the administrators sent from the mainland as the local controllers.
